Expert Chimney Repairs, From Repoint to Full Rebuild

A chimney repair is any work that restores a chimney stack to a sound, safe and watertight condition, from repointing failed mortar to rebuilding the brickwork above the roofline. If you need chimney repairs in Cornwall, the first job is reading the stack accurately: a leak around a chimney is far more often the lead flashing at its base than the brickwork itself, so knowing where to look is half the work.

That's exactly the combination we bring. Steve is an NVQ-qualified roofer and leadwork specialist, so he assesses the brickwork and the lead together, the two things that keep a chimney dry, and tells you precisely what the stack needs: a repoint, a partial rebuild, a full rebuild, or removal. Standing exposed at the highest, most weather-beaten point of the roof, a Cornish chimney has to be repaired by someone who understands both crafts. That's the work this business is named for.

The Chimney Work We Carry Out

Across West Cornwall's exposed roofs, these are the chimney jobs we're trusted with most:

Chimney repointing

Raking out failed, washed-out mortar and re-pointing the brickwork so the stack stays solid and weatherproof for years to come.

Partial repair & rebuilding the top courses

Renewing the brick courses that have spalled or worked loose while keeping the sound part of the stack, where that is the right call.

Full chimney rebuilds

Taking the stack down and rebuilding it properly where the brickwork is beyond repair or the chimney has started to lean.

Chimney flashing & leadwork

New lead step flashings, soakers, front aprons and back gutters around the base, fitted by an NVQ-qualified leadwork specialist, where most chimney leaks actually begin.

Chimney removal & making good

Taking down a redundant stack and re-covering the roof properly where it stood, leaving a sound, watertight finish.

Re-flaunching, cowls & pots

Renewing the mortar flaunching at the top, and fitting cowls and pots to keep out rain, cure downdraught and stop nesting birds.

Repair, Rebuild or Remove, and Why It Pays Off

You get the right job for your stack.Steve reads the chimney accurately and recommends exactly what it needs, a repoint, a rebuild, or removal, so you invest in the fix that genuinely solves it.

The leak is fixed at its true source.Because the lead around the stack is diagnosed by a leadwork specialist, the real cause of that damp patch gets put right, not just the brickwork around it.

Your stack is made safe.A leaning or crumbling chimney is a falling-masonry risk; a proper repair or rebuild restores it to a sound, secure condition.

It's built to stand the weather.Brickwork, mortar and lead are specified to cope with the salt-laden wind and driving rain that come straight in off the Atlantic, and the work is guaranteed for 10 years.

Why choose us

Why Choose Us for Chimney Work

With a chimney, the leak nearly always lives in the lead, and the lead is our specialism. Most leaks around a stack trace to the flashings, soakers and back gutter rather than the brickwork, and Steve is NVQ-qualified specifically in leadwork, so that detailing is renewed to the highest standard while the brickwork is repaired alongside it. Getting both right, by one specialist, is what keeps a stack permanently dry. All roofing follows BS 5534, the British Standard for slating and tiling, which sets out how the roof and its flashings must be fixed to withstand the wind loads on Cornwall's exposed coastal roofs, exactly the conditions a Cornish chimney faces year-round.

You're also in fully insured hands (public liability, employers' liability and hot-works cover for the torch and solder work on the lead) with over 10 years' experience on Cornish chimneys behind every job, and a 10-year workmanship guarantee on the work. The brickwork and the lead, both done to last.

About the Roofer, Steve Biggs

Chimney repairs are carried out by Steve Biggs, owner of West Cornwall Roofing & Leadwork. Steve has over 10 years' roofing experience across Penzance and West Cornwall, and is NVQ-qualified in roofing and leadwork, holds a flat-roofing certificate and a CSCS card, and is certified in working at height and asbestos awareness. The leadwork NVQ, a separate qualification from general roofing, is exactly what makes him the right roofer for a leaking stack.

“A chimney is brick and lead working together, and most leaks are the lead. Reading both correctly, what the brickwork needs and what the flashing needs, is what my roofing and leadwork training is for. Get the two right and the stack stays dry for decades.”Steve Biggs, owner and leadwork specialist

How Our Chimney Quotes Work

Every stack is different, so an accurate price starts with a proper look. What shapes a chimney quote is whether it is a repoint, a partial repair or a full rebuild, how much of the brickwork and lead has to be renewed, how accessible the stack is, and whether scaffolding is needed for safe working at height.

What you can always count on: a free inspection, a clear written quote that sets out exactly what's being done, and an expert recommendation on whether to repair, rebuild or remove, so you know precisely what's being carried out, why, and what it costs before any work starts.

Frequently asked questions

My chimney's leaking, is it the lead or the brickwork?+
Far more often the lead flashing than the brickwork, though sometimes it's the pointing or the stack itself. Diagnosing that accurately is exactly what Steve's leadwork specialism is for: he checks the lead first, then the brick, and fixes the real cause. See our leadwork page for more on chimney lead.
Do you repair and rebuild chimneys, or only one or the other?+
Both: repointing, partial repairs and full rebuilds. Where only the top courses have failed, Steve can renew those and keep the sound part of the stack. Where the brickwork is beyond saving or the stack is leaning, a full rebuild is the lasting answer, and he will tell you which your chimney needs.
Can you remove a chimney we no longer use?+
Yes. We take down redundant stacks and re-cover the roof properly where they stood, leaving a sound, watertight finish with no weak spot left behind. Steve will give you an expert view on whether removal is the right call for your property.
Do you fit chimney cowls and pots?+
Yes. Cowls and pots are fitted as part of chimney work to keep rain out, cure downdraught and stop birds nesting. They are often renewed at the same time as repointing or re-flaunching the top of the stack.
How urgent is a cracked or leaning chimney?+
Potentially a safety matter. A cracked, spalling or leaning stack can shed masonry, so it is worth getting looked at promptly. Steve will inspect it, give you an honest assessment of how serious it is, and make it safe if it needs urgent attention.

Don't let a crumbling stack or a leak around the chimney become bigger damage inside. Get an expert assessment and a clear written quote from a roofer qualified in both the brickwork and the lead, every repair backed by our 10-year workmanship guarantee.
