Helston is the gateway to the Lizard, and its roofs sit at the meeting point of two very different worlds: the sheltered old town and the wide-open, weather-hammered coast beyond. In town, the granite and slate buildings running up Coinagehall Street and Meneage Street are solid period properties, much of it traditional Cornish slate that needs careful matching whenever it's repaired or relaid.

Head south towards the coast and it's a different story altogether. The villages out on the peninsula (Porthleven on the bay, Mullion towards Lizard Point, and the hamlets in between) take the full force of the Atlantic. Driving rain, salt air and sustained wind find every weak fixing, lifted ridge and tired flashing, and out on Britain's most southerly point there's very little shelter to break it. Roofs here have to be detailed and fixed properly to stand up to that exposure, year after year.
